So how do you know if you even need a dehumidifier? Well, let's take the summer for example. If
you keep your air conditioning unit on all summer and the windows and doors closed, check the relative humidity in
various rooms throughout your house with a hygrometer. If your relative humidity reads above 50%, then it
would be a good idea to have a dehumidifier to take away excess moisture. Often the highest relative humidity will
be in the basement and your dehumidifier would be well-placed here.
If you've ever lived without a dehumidifier, you'll know it can be as little as a few days before you'll start
to notice unpleasant things such as a light rusting on your tools in your basement workshop. It only takes a few
more days before you may notice mildew and mold starting to appear, which is more than just a nuisance and could
lead to serious health issues.
There are several manufacturers of the dehumidifiers. Some of the more popular manufacturer names are Kenmore,
Santa Fe, Home Comforts, Soleus, Fridgidaire, and others. You can see these brands and models in the left
hand column.
Expect to pay anywhere from around $140 for a 25 point dehumidifier to $250 for a 60 pint model. The
Frigidaire 70-pint model cost less than this and is a
star performer and can be had for much less than $250! It's the best selling dehumidifier on Amazon. I
have a Frigidaire 70-pint dehumidifier, model FAD704DUD and am very satisfied with it.
According to Frigidaire, this 70 pint dehumidifier is designed for medium sized rooms. I have found that it
works very well for my basement, which is around 30' x 50'. It's important not to be cheap when buying a
dehumidifier. If the dehumidifier you choose is not powerful enough for your needs, it will just be a waste of
money because it will continually run but won't be able to do the job.
The FAD704DUD has a filter clean reminder light that
will remind you it's time to clean the washable filter after 250 hours of operation. As well, it has a "bucket
full" indicator light, and the dehumidifier will cease running until the bucket is emptied.
That's but a few of the reasons that the Frigidaire FAD704DUD is one of the top rated
dehumidifiers!
